    Test Engineer III – DET Lab – HP-Vancouver

    General Expectations:

    The DET (Design Evaluation Testing) Test Engineer III will be expected to work independently but under the supervision of the HP HWQE and R&D Engineers. The DET Lab Test Engineer III will also be expected to be the lead engineer and DET Lab subject matter expert (SME) for the other service provider engineers and technicians working in the DET Labs.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer III will be expected to be an SME and possess a high level working knowledge for the majority of tests performed in the DET and ETL (Environmental Test) Labs, including both ambient and climatic testing.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer III will oversee, create and manage process documentation including test procedures & instructions, test data and test reports.  The TE3 will be responsible for reviewing and approving all test data and test reports created by lower level DET Test Engineers and Technicians.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer III will be able to setup and perform experiments to determine root cause on failures, or with engineering guidance from HP technical staff. Communication and documentation of the test processes and results from the experiments will be expected.

    As the lead engineer, the DET Lab Test Engineer III will provide leadership, direction and strategy, mentoring, training and technical support for the other service provider engineers, technicians, testers and operators working in the DET Labs. The DET Lab Test Engineer III will also be the main escalation point of contact for the HP HWQE and R&D Engineers.




    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • For the purposes of this HP requirements document, DET Labs encompasses ambient product testing, and environmental (temperature/humidity extremes) in the ETL climatic chambers.
    • Works under the technical direction of HP HWQE and R&D engineering staff, but with a minimum of supervision from HP engineering & technical staff.
    • Oversees the development and preparation of all DET Lab product test plans, from inception to completion.  Includes documenting, reporting & communication of all findings, data, defects, issues and observations, verbal/written formats, to HP HWQE and R&D engineering teams.
    • Overall test engineering responsibility & leadership for all aspects DET & ETL product testing, process changes, forecasting & scheduling, data acquisition and analysis.
    • Provide direction and guidance for preparation of detailed weekly reports on KaMP test status and staffing level forecasts + actuals, to HP HWQE and R&D technical staff and management.
    • Is responsible for ensuring all KaMP test requests are adequately supplied with media, print bars, print heads, ink supplies, ink cartridges and other consumables, including forecasting.
    • Leadership role in coordinating, managing and implementing improvements to existing DET/ETL test plans, documentation, training, tools, processes, data entry and reporting.
    • Owner & driver of initiatives to identify, quantify and recommend test changes to improve efficiencies & effectiveness, resulting in test cost savings and higher quality products.
    • Under the guidance of test owners, performs defect/issue characterization & analysis, including extensive troubleshooting, to assist HP engineers in determining root cause, and provides recommendations for possible solutions. 
    • Prompt follow-up with Technicians, Testers & Operators to ensure proper handling of specific defects/issues moving forward.




    Position Qualifications:

    • The DET Lab Test Engineer III is expected to have competent skills in:
      • Project, process, product and change management
      • DET test planning leadership & meeting facilitation
      • DET test effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and methodologies
      • Ability to prioritize different test requests from multiple HP test owners
      • HP product development lifecycles and product test verification methodologies
      • Editing DET test scripts in Flexscript, Python, .net, html & other scripting languages
      • DET & ETL test data acquisition and analytics
      • Determining staffing levels & scheduling of test resources for KaMP test requests
      • Resource, space, equipment, tooling and storage planning for product test operations
      • Data acquisition, analytics, integrity, mining, error correction, parsing and reporting
    • Advanced subject matter expertise (SME) for creation of DET/ETL product test plans:
      • Schedule & lead test planning meetings with HP HWQE and R&D technical staff to collect test requirements, parameters, staffing and scheduling needs
      • Provides input, suggestions and design or test solutions to meet HP’s requirements
      • Document special or new requests, and the ability of current staffing to accomplish these requests while maintaining standard test procedures.
      • Recommend necessary staffing skill sets & scoping levels to complete KaMP’s.
      • Captures all of HP’s data capture requirements and implements necessary data acquisition process changes to ensure data analytics requirements will be met.
      • Write initial KaMP test plan and review with HP test owners to ensure HP’s expectations are being met.  Responsible for escalating incongruences to HP management.
      • Submit finalized KaMP test plan for HP engineering approval.
    • Advanced SME & proven leadership in the planning, staffing & execution of  DET/EDL Lab tests:
      • Forecasts and schedules all KaMP test requests on a daily/weekly as-needed basis
      • Schedules meetings with HP test owners on a regular basis to review ongoing status of KaMP test requests, and provides coordination with other test labs to ensure smooth unit test movements and successful completion of the testing.
      • Coordinates with HP’s characterization and prototype labs to ensure smooth introduction of new product builds into the DET/ETL test labs, during product startup.
      • Creation of loading lists for running of DET/ETL test scripts.
      • Continually monitors test status and reviews product testing needs with HP test owners, and recommends or executes test extensions.
      • Meet with HP test owners on a regular basis (daily/weekly as required) to review and characterize defects, provide Q&A, and collaborate on necessary in-flight test corrections, changes or extensions.
      • Leadership role in prioritization of all KaMP test requests in the DET/EDL labs.
      • Immediate communication to HP test owners when a test should be shut-down or temporarily suspended.  At the same time, minimizing staff idle and downtime.
      • Manage changing test needs from multiple stakeholders, affecting HP test owners.  Then provides recommended solutions + test plan changes to the HP test owners, to optimize HP product testing requirements with test lab operational capabilities.
      • Responsible for overseeing the entry of defects into HP’s defect tracking systems.
    • Works with HP HWQE and R&D technical staff + management to ensure current & future DET/ETL lab space requirements are capable of meeting HP’s product test needs.
    • Provides strategic direction and leadership, as part of HP’s product life cycle management process, to adapt and recommend improvements of new testing processes, procedures, equipment, tools, and methods, for the testing of new product builds.
    • Partners with HP HWQE and R&D technical staff, in the investigation of problems, issues, defects, FW asserts, failures and test results.  Provides SME level guidance for possible product or testing design improvements, or changes to existing qualification, quantification and verification test methodologies.
    • Provides advance product test engineering leadership to the entire test team, ensuring overall test methodologies & processes meets HP’s product test schedules & technical requirements.
    • Oversees ongoing training, instruction + certification of technicians, testers & operators, operation of new test tools, advanced test script development, and new testing procedures.
    • Manages DET test engineer 2, test engineer 1, test technicians and systems administrators, for adherence to regular maintenance of all test equipment to ensure readiness for current and future test requirements, and also maximization of uptime.  This includes hardware and software updates, maintenance, and ensuring adequate replacement & spare parts or materials are on hand.
    • Good written and verbal communications to all levels of the HP & service provider organizations.  Ability to communicate effectively with managers, engineers and technicians.
    • Applies advanced technical subject matter expertise to solve complex issues and projects. Uses independent problem-solving and decision making skills to promptly resolve DET issues.
    • Ability to listen to and follow instructions, ask for clarification as needed, express concerns, and offer ideas. Instructions may be in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Ability to read, interpret, understand and follow technical drawings, product design specifications, process procedures, engineering test plans and other technical instructions.
    • Able to multi-task, maintain focus with flexibility to prioritize workflow according to test or engineer’s guidelines and execute test plans based on HP engineering test requests.
    • Ability to manage both daily duties and special assignments.
    • Basic proficiency MS-Outlook, MS-Word and MS-Excel, Windows & Linux OS’s.
    • Willingness to occasionally work a compressed work week, evenings, nights, and weekends.
    • The DET Test Engineer III understands the business impact to HP if the products do not meet product quality & reliability and requirements, which may include late market introduction, stop shipments, high warranty costs and lost revenue to HP.



    Education, Work Experience Required & Job Scoping:

    • Education: 4 year Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is mandatory, with Master’s degree highly desirable.
    • Work Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience at a Test Engineer II level, and +6 years’ overall work experience in a product development test environment.  Work experience requirements can be waived/reduced depending on education qualifications, skillset, industry standard certifications or other related industry work experience.
    • Job Scoping: Test Engineer III – Fulfills the minimum expectations of the DET Lab Position.  Test Engineer II – Trainee level for the Test Engineer III position.
