    Test Engineer I – DET Lab – HP-Vancouver

    General Expectations:

    The DET (Design Evaluation Testing) Test Engineer I will be expected to work primarily under the supervision of TE3/TE2’s, but also HP technical staff. The DET Lab Test Engineer I supports the TE3/TE2 on HP’s product development program, DET testing and product qualification.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer I will be expected to possess a good working knowledge for the majority of tests performed in the DET and ETL (Environmental Test) Labs, including both ambient and climatic testing.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer I will assist the TE3/TE2 in the creation and management of process documentation including test procedures & instructions, test data and test reports, for their assigned programs.  The Test Engineer I will be responsible for reviewing and approving all test data and test reports created by lower level DET Test Tech’s & Operators, on their assigned programs.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer I will be able to setup and perform experiments to determine root cause on failures, or with engineering guidance from TE3/TE2’s. Communication and documentation of the test processes and results from the experiments will be expected.

    The DET Lab Test Engineer I will provide direction, mentoring, training and technical support for the DET Lab technicians, testers and operators working in the DET Labs, on their assigned programs.




    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • For the purposes of this HP requirements document, DET Labs encompasses ambient product testing, and environmental (temperature/humidity extremes) in the ETL climatic chambers.
    • Works primarily under the technical direction of the TE3/TE2’s, but with a minimum of
    • Assists in the development and preparation of all DET Lab product test plans.  Includes documenting, reporting & communication of all findings, data, defects, issues and observations, verbal/written formats, to be reviewed by the TE3/TE2’s.
    • Assist in the preparation of detailed weekly reports on KaMP test status and staffing level forecasts + actuals.
    • Responsible for ensuring all KaMP test requests are adequately supplied with media, print bars, print heads, ink supplies, ink cartridges and other consumables, including forecasting.
    • Coordinates, manages and implements improvements to existing DET/ETL test plans, documentation, training, tools, processes, data entry and reporting.
    • Assists the TE3/TE2’s for initiatives to identify, quantify and recommend test changes to improve efficiencies & effectiveness, resulting in test cost savings and higher quality products.
    • Under the guidance of TE3/TE2’s, performs defect/issue characterization & analysis, including some troubleshooting, to assist HP engineers in determining root cause. 
    • Prompt follow-up with Technicians, Testers & Operators to ensure proper handling of specific defects/issues moving forward.
    • May be require to work in an enclosed environmental chamber to troubleshoot issues, with temperature range from 60 to 90 deg. F & humidity range from 20 to 80% RH.




    Position Qualifications:

    • The DET Lab Test Engineer I is expected to have competent skills in:
      • Project, process, product and change management
      • DET test planning meeting facilitation
      • DET test effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and methodologies
      • HP product development lifecycles and product test verification methodologies
      • Some simple editing DET test scripts in Flexscript, Python, .net, html & other scripting languages
      • DET & ETL test data acquisition.
      • Resource, space, equipment, tooling and storage planning for product test operations
      • Assist in data acquisition, analytics, integrity, mining, error correction, parsing and reporting
    • Subject matter expertise (SME) in some of the following areas:
      • Provides input, suggestions and design or test solutions to meet HP’s requirements
      • Document special or new requests, and the ability of current staffing to accomplish these requests while maintaining standard test procedures.
      • Recommend necessary staffing skill sets & scoping levels to complete KaMP’s.
      • Captures all of HP’s data capture requirements and implements necessary data acquisition process changes to ensure data analytics requirements will be met.
      • Write initial KaMP test plan and review with TE3/TE2’s to ensure HP’s expectations are being met.  Responsible for escalating incongruences to the TE3/TE2’s.
      • Submit finalized KaMP test plan for TE3/TE2 approval.
    • SME in some of the following, planning, staffing & execution of  DET/EDL Lab tests:
      • Forecasts and schedules all KaMP test requests on a daily/weekly as-needed basis
      • Provides coordination with other test labs to ensure smooth unit test movements and successful completion of the testing.
      • Coordinates with HP’s characterization and prototype labs to ensure smooth introduction of new product builds into the DET/ETL test labs, during product startup.
      • Creation of loading lists for running of DET/ETL test scripts.
      • Continually monitors test status and reviews product testing needs with HP test owners, and recommends or executes test extensions.
      • Minimize test operator staff idle and downtime.
      • Responsible for assigned program, correct data entry in HP’s ALM DTS system.
    • Assists the TE3/TE’2, input on strategic direction and strategy, as part of HP’s product life cycle management process, to adapt and recommend improvements of new testing processes, procedures, equipment, tools, and methods, for the testing of new product builds.
    • Partners with TE3/TE2’s, in the investigation of problems, issues, defects, FW asserts, failures and test results.  Provides suggestions for possible product or testing design improvements, or changes to existing qualification, quantification and verification test methodologies.
    • Provides product test engineering guidance to the TE3/TE2’s, ensuring overall test methodologies & processes meets HP’s product test schedules & technical requirements.
    • Supports ongoing training, instruction + certification of technicians, testers & operators, operation of new test tools, advanced test script development, and new testing procedures.
    • Good written and verbal communications within the service provider organizations.
    • Uses independent problem-solving and decision making skills to promptly resolve DET issues.
    • Ability to listen to and follow instructions, ask for clarification as needed, express concerns, and offer ideas. Instructions may be in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Ability to read, interpret, understand and follow technical drawings, product design specifications, process procedures, engineering test plans and other technical instructions.
    • Able to multi-task, maintain focus with flexibility to prioritize workflow according to test or engineer’s guidelines and execute test plans based on HP engineering test requests.
    • Ability to manage both daily duties and special assignments.
    • Basic proficiency MS-Outlook, MS-Word and MS-Excel, Windows & Linux OS’s.
    • Willingness to occasionally work a compressed work week, evenings, nights, and weekends.



    Education, Work Experience Required & Job Scoping:

    • Education: 4 year Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is highly desirable.  2-3 year post-secondary diploma in a STEM field is required.
    • Work Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience at an Escalation Tech-III level, and +3 years’ overall work experience in a product development test environment.  Work experience requirements can be waived/reduced depending on education qualifications, skillset, industry standard certifications or other related industry work experience.
    • Job Scoping: Test Engineer I – Fulfills the minimum expectations of the DET Lab Position.  Escalation Tech-III – Trainee level for the Test Engineer I position.
