    General Expectations:

    The Acoustics Lab Test Engineer-1 (TE-1) position assumes a leadership role in the Acoustics Lab for all product development testing needs. The TE-1 independently performs the Essential Duties and Responsibilities detailed below. The TE-1 is responsible for training Test Technician-III’s and is capable of performing all tasks expected of a Test Tech-III in Acoustics at a level higher than the Test Tech-III, including  Data analysis; Design and test process improvement recommendations; Test report preparation; MATLAB & VBA programming; and high level defect/root cause analysis. 

    The TE-1 schedules, hosts, facilitates, documents, and tracks action items related to acoustic test requests, by interacting directly with HP and contractor engineers and technicians. The TE-1 reviews test requests and provides feedback on any requested product modification/rework instructions.  The TE-1 may then assign and oversee test setup and data collection to a Test Tech-III.  The Acoustics Lab TE-1 works under the direction of HP technical staff and/or service provider TE2/TE3 engineers.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • The Acoustics Lab TE-1 performs duties assigned by the HP Acoustics technical staff and/or service provider TE2/TE3 engineers. Present duties are described in the following bullets.  Additional duties of commensurate skill and responsibility may be added as the capabilities of HP Vancouver Acoustic Lab increase over time.
    • Lab maintenance
      • Checking calibration of microphones, binaural head, and head phones.
      • Identifying faulty microphones, sensors and conditioning by component swap.
      • Sending and receiving shipments.
      • Installing computer hardware like hard drives and audio cards.
      • Creating disk image backups.
      • Filing instrumentation manuals, calibration forms, etc.
    • Test preparation
      • Gathering printer units & loading firmware onto printer units.
      • Positioning and wiring microphones other sensors around and in the device under test.
      • Building noise control prototypes.
      • Fabricating signal and power cables.
      • Building fixtures for special tests.
      • Preparation of draft test procedures.
    • Test execution
      • Gathering recordings with microphones and other sensors.
      • Commanding printers by driver, FlexTool or FlexScript.
      • Collection of printer SIFT files.
      • Analyzing recordings made with microphones and other sensors.
      • Windowing of recordings in time.
      • Analyzing recordings into acoustic metrics and sound images.
      • Disposing of printer units.
    • Knowledgeable in the operation of the following test & measurement (T&M) equipment:
      • “Head” Artemis (Acoustics Analysis Tool)
      • “Head” Recorder
      • “Microflown” Probe, Scan & Listen, Scan & Paint
      • Binaural Head (microphone-instrumented dummy head )
      • “Head” sound quality playback system
      • Precision Microphones
      • Accelerometers for Acoustic Frequency measurement
    • Lab capabilities and automation
      • Extend Signature Analyzer capabilities by MATLAB programming.
      • Extend acoustic summary data management capabilities by VBA programming.
      • Ability to write & debug SW code in MATLAB & VBA applications.
    • Generation of documentation
      • Processing test requests.
      • Logging acoustic test data.
      • Analyzing acoustics data and incorporating into draft reports.
      • Submitting functional and acoustics goal-deficient defects into HP’s ALM Defect Tracking System.
      • Populating noise emission declarations and applications for eco-labels.
    • Observing and reporting behavior and test results to Acoustics Process Engineer and Acoustics Project Engineer.
    • Performing minor repairs and preventative maintenance, in accordance with Acoustics Lab test equipment user guides.
    • Submitting work requests to the HP Model Shop.
    • Communicating with external suppliers for obtaining quotations, Acoustics Lab equipment procurement, maintenance & repair.
    • Drafting instructions and procedures for using and maintaining Acoustics Lab equipment .
    • Providing suggestions on Acoustics Lab process & testing.
    • Training and monitoring temporary Technician III, Technician II, Tester 1, and Operator 3 staff temporarily assigned to the Acoustics Lab, as workload dictates.



    Position Qualifications:

    • Good verbal communication, independent problem-solving and soft skills. 
    • Able to listen to and follow instructions, ask for clarification as needed, express concerns, and offer ideas.
    • Ability to read & interpret procedures, and test instruction documentation.
    • Able to multi-task, maintain focus & flexibility, and prioritize workflow in the face of changing test and organizational demands.
    • Training skills to share learned acoustics lab capabilities with lower scoped technicians.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Able to complete forms documenting printer acoustic performance.
    • Capable of working independently with a minimum of supervision.
    • Able to use hand tools to modify printer prototypes and fabricate fixtures.
    • Able to build basic signal and power cables.
    • Able to install computer hardware such as hard drives and audio cards.
    • Able to operate a computer along with basic proficiency in MS-Outlook, MS-Word, MS-Excel and Windows operating systems.
    • Willing to learn the operation and maintenance of Acoustics Lab equipment and grow with Acoustics Lab capabilities.
    • Experience in data acquisition and data acquisition systems, ideally in an experimental lab environment.
    • Experience or willing to learn Oracle & MS-Access database query tools (SQL, Tableau, etc.)
    • Ability to anticipate needs and envision test outcome dependent scenarios.
    • Must be able to program in MATLAB and VBA.
    • Engineering and technical test report preparation & writing skills.
    • Some knowledge of Oracle & MS-Access databases and data query tools (Tableau, SQL, etc.)
    • Willing to occasionally work a compressed work week, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays


    Education, Work Experience Required & Job Scoping:

    • Education: 4 year Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is highly desirable.  2-3 year post-secondary diploma in a STEM field is required.
    • Work Experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience at a Tech-III level, and +3 years’ overall work experience in a product development test environment.  Work experience requirements can be waived/reduced depending on education qualifications, skillset, industry standard certifications or other related industry work experience.
    • Job Scoping: Test Engineer 1 – Fulfills the minimum expectations of the Acoustics Lab position.  Technician III – Trainee level for the Acoustics Lab Tech III position.
